Blood glucose range – normal level
You can keep your glucose levels under control if you know what normal blood glucose ranges are. Normally the glucose levels in the morning before you eat anything are lowest. After you eat anything they may go up within a marginal range of 80mg/dL to 150mg/dL (i.e. 3.9 to 8.3mmol/L). The level may even go up to 150mg/dL mostly if you have meals rich in carbohydrates. It should preferably not exceed beyond that for long. Beyond this level it could be indicative of pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Blood glucose levels may go high or low in newborns as well as teenagers. Parents should be aware of safe blood glucose ranges for children. They can take immediate measures so that the little ones do not suffer from ill effects of high or low blood glucose levels. It should be preferably in the range of 80mg/dL to 140mg/dL. Blood glucose range – normal level for the blood glucose tests
* Fasting blood glucose test: This test is taken after at least 8 hours of fasting. The normal range for this test is at 70 to 110mg/dL. If it is more than 126mg/dL in consecutive blood tests it indicates pre-diabetes level. Beyond 140mg/dL it may be diagnosed as diabetes.
* Postprandial test: The postprandial test conducted 2 hours after you eat anything has a normal range of 80 to 120mg/dL. Levels can be high after meals but they are usually temporary and would normally come down to under 100mg/dL or 5.5 after two hours.
* Random blood glucose test: The random test done any time of day, irrespective of when you had your last meal or exercises, have a normal range between 70 to 125mg/dL. 126mg/dL is considered as pre-diabetes and anything higher than 200 mg/dl or 11.1mmol/L may be diabetes.
* Oral glucose tolerance test: This test is undertaken to measure body’s response to sugar. It involves measuring fasting blood sugar level first before you consume a sugary solution. The glucose level is again measured after two hours. The range for this test too should be less than 140mg/dL or 7.8mmol/L.
* Glycated hemoglobin (A1C): The A1C test is mostly to find if you have control on diabetes or blood glucose levels over a period of time. It gives average blood sugar for the past three months as it shows the percentage of your hemoglobin which is sugar coated. The normal range for non diabetics should be 4 to 6 percent and lower than 7 percent for diabetics. It should be less than 6 percent during pregnancy.
